#Mad max fury road parents guide movie
This hastily cobbled together group is motivated by tangible hope and knowingly give of themselves to a liberating cause. This movie has a very simple screenplay on paper: a high-speed car chase from point A to point B. The community forged by Furiosa, Max, Nux, and the former breeders offers a meaningful counterpoint to the Citadel. The parallels here to the self-negating aspects of every major religion are just as irresistible as the comparisons to our present-day economy.

His underlings are expendable religious pawns who credulously chant, “I live, I die, I live again,” as they martyr themselves in anticipation of a chrome-plated afterlife in Valhalla.

Is it just me, or does this bear more than a passing resemblance to our current system, breaking the minds and backs of domestic minimum wage earners and overseas sweatshop laborers?Īdditionally, Immortan Joe is the god of the Citadel, mythologized as creator and savior. Joe rules over a literal trickle-down economy, as he even controls the intermittent flow of water to the needy folk below him. At the Citadel, its mostly unnamed denizens are soullessly categorized by their use to Immortan Joe, be they breeders, War Boys, milk machines, or blood donors.

In addition, Miller periodically manipulates the frame rate, giving some scenes an overcaffeinated zip and other sequences a jerky, hyperintense quality.īy way of the Citadel, Fury Road serves up pointed commentary on two key forces that devalue humanity in the real world, our global economy and our religions. When the action briefly slows, about 30 minutes into Fury Road, the onscreen near-silence potently contrasts with the furor of all that has gone before. As Max aids these women in their flight from the wrathful Immortan Joe, they pick up another refugee, a gravely ill War Boy named Nux (Christopher Hoult), wrestling to unchain his mind from Joe’s indoctrination.Īs he did in The Road Warrior (far and away the best of the original trilogy), director George Miller shows himself to be a master of pacing and choreography. Almost wordlessly and oh so cleverly, these two leads transform themselves from desperate adversaries to trusted collaborators. In a spectacular, propulsive string of events, the fates of Max and Furiosa become intertwined. Under the guise of a trucking run to a gas refinery, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) makes a run for safety with five of Joe’s comely “breeders.” Unsurprisingly, these fertile concubines want better lives for themselves and their offspring. Meanwhile, another slave is boldly attempting an escape from Joe’s clutches. A masked and armored tyrant, Joe presents himself as the ruler and deity of the Citadel, a rare oasis of water and greenery. Remarkably, life soon gets even worse for Max, as he’s captured and enslaved by the War Boys of Immortan Joe. Fending off thugs and gangs, Max traverses the desert alone, merely surviving. In a primitive, post-nuclear world, Max is haunted by flashbacks of the wife and child he failed to save from marauding psychopaths. Former cop Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) exists in a mental and geographical wasteland. Not since Christopher Nolan’s superb Inception has an action film so effectively combined story, ideas, characters, and world creation.įor anyone who hasn’t revisited the Mad Max movies since Beyond Thunderdome’s release 30 years ago, the opening minutes of Fury Road will quickly bring you up to speed. Then along comes the reboot of George Miller’s classic Mad Max trilogy, and my hopes for the possibilities of this genre are restored.
